Instrument Care and Safety Tips for Beginners

1. Keep the instrument clean, wash hands before using and do not touch the bow hair. Wipe the strings and the body of the violin with a cloth after playing to remove rosin build up.

2. Only tighten the bow to one pinky width between the hair and stick in the middle of the bow for playing. Always loosen the bow until the hair begins to slacken when putting it away.

3. Do not use the tuning pegs without teacher supervision. It is very easy to break a string

4. Do not attempt to make any repairs. Bring it to Mr. Charpentier if there are any problems.

5. Always protect the bridge. It is the most fragile part of the instrument.

6. Be mindful of where you set the instrument down to avoid falls or getting stepped on and never set it down on its face.

7. Be aware that extreme high/low temperatures and/or humidity can damage the instrument. Do not leave instruments in a car overnight in winter or inside a hot car in summer for example.
